MSG (Ret) Harvey P. Smith, Jr.




Raleigh – MSG Smith, 89, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 10005 Lake Wheeler Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC, with Reverend Rick Carter, Reverend Jack Lee and Colonel (Ret) Dr. Quincy Scott officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00, prior to the service in the church fellowship hall and sanctuary, and other times at his home. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery with full Military Honors.

MSG Smith was born in Charlotte, NC, the son of the late, Harvey P. Sr. and Neva Eaker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Mollie Kate Moore; sons, Harvey III “Butch” (Jean), Clark; and step son, James I Fountain Jr.; daughters, Naomi S. Lambert (George), Laura L. Smith (Mark), and Linda G. Ball (Danny); 8 grandchildren, Wayne Jr., Chandler (Aimee), Preston, Adams, Audrey A. Lambert, Timothy and Katie Hockaday, and George Lambert III (Jessica); three great-grandchildren, Damian Botner, George IV, and Addilynn Lambert; sisters, Sara Thompson (Dan), and Ellie McLeod; and brother, Michael (Becky).

He was preceded in death by stepdaughter, Mary K. Fountain Collins; step granddaughter, Elizabeth G. Collins; and son, Wayne Sr.

During his 30 years Army Service, Korea, 1951/52, Vietnam, 1967/68, France, 1955/59 and several stateside assignments. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal w/6 awards, American Defense Service Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, US Army Reserve Medal and Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean and Vietnam Service Medals. He retired from active duty in January 1971. In 1972, he was recalled to Active Reserve Duty to assist in establishing a recruiting program for the Army Reserve in Eastern NC. He was given the civilian rank GS7, Recruiting Specialist and retained his active duty rank.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist church for over 45 years, served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Cemetery Commission Chair and other Committees. Besides his family and friends, he loved computers and was an avid bowler for 50 plus years.
