He began working for CP&L in 1966 and enjoyed a 35 year career as a truck driver for the General Warehouse and Materials Management Division hauling supplies to other locations for the company. Richard and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV along with members of the NC Chapter 70 Holiday Rambler RV Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, William and Macy; and his sister, Jewel Orr.

Richard and his wife were long time and active members of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina, NC. They were also active members on the Board of Directors of Command Evangelism and participated in evangelistic work with Rev. C. Paul Jones.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ernestine Jones Southerland; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Laura Southerland of Middlesex, NC; his sister-in-law, Nancy Jones Godwin of Holly Springs; and also by several nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to the family, the community, the church and friends and neighbors who provide prayers and support to Richard and Ernestine over the past several months.
