Obituary

Fuquay-Varina – Emily Walton Stevens Stephenson of Fuquay-Varina and Durham, was the youngest daughter of Wayland and Mamie Burt Stevens of Fuquay-Varina. Emily was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill in Library Science and English teaching, after earlier attending Duke University. Her long career as a librarian was spent at Carrington Junior High School, in Durham, where she lived until her most elder years. Emily loved her job working with students, and had a lifelong love of books and learning, and the arts, especially the theater. Her son Dan was very dear to her until his untimely death just prior to his 21st birthday, after attending UNC-Chapel Hill. She became even closer to her two nephews after his loss, as well as her nieces and children of both. Cousins Fred and Shirley Burt and children were part of her family holidays. Emily and Dan were long-time attendees of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Durham, where Dan was a member and acolyte. Emily’s loyalties were split with Trinity Episcopal in Fuquay-Varina where she was a founding member. As an English graduate, Emily was thrilled to spend a sabbatical traveling to England, guided by an English Shakespearean scholar.

Emily was predeceased by her son, Dan Clark Stephenson (1975) and her sisters, Dorothy Sutherland, Rebecca Mullen, and Clara Thomas.

Emily is survived by two nephews and nieces, Chris and Karen Mullen of Holly Springs, Rick Mullen and Suzy Turner of Fuquay-Varina, Teresa Thomas Birchard of San Jose and husband, George of Clinton, NC, and Mary Paul Thomas of Garner. She is also survived by two grandnieces and grandnephews, Samantha Birchard of Pittsboro, Melissa Birchard and Franz Matzner of New Hampshire, Kit Mullen of Holly Springs, and Alex Mullen of San Diego. Emily had two great-grandnephews, twins, Fjord and Wolfgang Matzner of New Hampshire.

Memorial service will be at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 30, 2018 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1128 S. Main Street, Fuquay-Varina. Visitation with family will be from 11:00 to 12:00, prior to the service.
