Fuquay-Varina - Marty Grady Stephens, 69, peacefully passed from our presence on Saturday evening, June 9, at her home surrounded by family and close friends. She was driven by her desire to love and to be loved by God and to pour that same love into the life of her husband, Jim, the lives of her children, Emily and husband Anthony Renfro of Apex, and Matt and wife Brooke Stephens of Wilmington, and her four cherished grandchildren, Fletcher and Allie Stephens and Nate and Libby Renfro, who adored their Nana. She is also survived by her sister, Bebe Coleman of Creedmoor, niece, Amy Coleman McFalls and her son Alex McFalls of Butner.
Marty grew up in Smithfield and Butner with her parents, Dr. Edward S and Eloise McLemore. She is a graduate of Peace College and St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and received her master’s degree as a reading specialist from Meredith College. She loved teaching children of all ages.
Marty’s desire was to live in the presence of God that surrounded her and to celebrate every day with joy, something she would not let ALS steal from her. She was deeply loved by a large group of friends and extended family who had the privilege of knowing her and were the recipients of her boundless grace and unconditional love. All are far better people for having been a part of her life and will always cherish her memory.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Wake Chapel Christian Church, 905 Wake Chapel Road, Fuquay-Varina. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.

Thank you for signing Martha Grady Stephens's Guestbook
My best wishes to all of Marty's family - she loved all of you so much. I was fortunate to re-connect with her several years ago before ALS struck her. I know how much she misses looking out for you.

Our family is sad to hear of Mary's passing. I lived in the apartment of their house on Aiken Parkway when I first moved to Fuquay in 1977. Marty and the Stephens family were always special to me in my first years here. Praying for your peace.
