She was born Faye McBride to Helen and Leonard Osby McBride in Barn, WV on May 2, 1931 but eventually renamed herself Charlotte Faye McBride. As a young woman she put herself through high school in town by trading housework for her room and board with an aunt. After graduation, she and a girlfriend left home to seek jobs in Chicago. There she met Roy Eldon Shumate, a handsome electrician. After they married on July 10, 1950, she stayed at home on Fairfield Avenue in Lombard IL raising their five children while he worked at the General Electric Company. Upon his retirement, they relocated to North Wilkesboro NC near his family. When her children began to leave the nest, Mrs. Shumate became the first member of her family to attend college, received an associate's degree in early childhood education, and taught in a program for underprivileged kids, bathing and feeding youngsters as well as educating them.
In addition to spending many happy hours with her grandchildren and their children, Mrs. Shumate devoted much of her energy to caring for other family members. She faithfully looked after her husband during his extended illness, helped her children, and assisted her beloved sister Rosia and her sister-in-law Nora. When her mother 's heath began to fail, Mrs. Shumate regularly made the long drive to visit her in a nursing home in WV, often accompanied by small children who delighted her mother.
After her husband died, Mrs. Shumate remained in North Wilkesboro for a few years near her son Richard but eventually moved to the Raleigh-Durham area where Judy, David, and Debbie lived. She loved to visit her daughter Claudia in Florida.
Wherever she lived, Mrs. Shumate was a lifelong church member, attending the Church of the Brethren in Illinois, Hinshaw Baptist in North Wilkesboro, Greenwood Forest Baptist in Cary, and St. Philip's Episcopal in Durham.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Charity, Osby, and Rosia; her husband, Roy Eldon Shumate; her parents, Leonard Osby McBride and Helen G. McBride; and her granddaughter, Jennalee Shumate.
