Dr. John Wesley Deyton Jr.




Fuquay-Varina - Dr. John Wesley Deyton Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Rex Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 18th at Piney Grove Baptist Church, 3217 Piney Grove Wilbon Road, Fuquay-Varina. Graveside service with military honors will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20th at St Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, 114 Poplar Mount Road, Norlina, NC.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John Wesley Deyton Sr. and Ruby Wiseman Deyton.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Clara Brauer Deyton; sons, John Wesley Deyton III and wife, Jennifer of Swickley PA, and David Deyton and wife, Kim of Fuquay-Varina, NC; brothers, Dr. Walter Deyton of Asheville, NC, Dr. Guy Smith Deyton of Kansas City, MO, and Dr. Lawrence Deyton of Washington DC; grandchildren, Heather, Jonathan, and Wesley; three great-grandchildren, Zoe, Zander, and Lydia.

John was born on March 29, 1929 in Spruce Pine NC. After graduating from UNC Medical School in 1956 he joined the US Navy Medical Corps. and served 20 years. His military career included being a flight surgeon with VMFA 224 Marine All Weather Fighter Attack squadron and serving on the aircraft carriers, the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Independence. He served from 1968 to 1969 in Vietnam as Commanding Officer of 1st Hospital Company in DaNang, Vietnam where he received a Bronze Star. He retired with the rank of Captain USN. He went into private practice in Jacksonville NC as a partner in Jacksonville Women’s Clinic for over 30 years. During his career, he delivered over 2500 babies. John and Clara were active in Calvary Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, NC where he served as an Elder and founding member. He loved spending time with his family, traveling, and hiking, especially in the North Carolina mountains. He will be remembered for the love and devotion for God and family, his passion for UNC basketball and his love of history, especially that of North Carolina.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 17th from 4 to 6 at Thomas Funeral Home, 401 N Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina.
