Willow Spring - Wade Hampton Weekes, age 89, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, 401 N Ennis Street, Fuquay-Varina, NC. The family will receive friends following the service.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Donna Adele Weekes; children, Michael Park Weekes (wife Anita) and Tanya Denise Nystrom (husband Jim); grandchildren, Laura Ashley Flowers (husband Joe), Jennifer Marie Dutton, Amanda Lauren Weekes, Natalie Christine Tokio (husband Everett) and Wade Hampton Weekes, II; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Eden Flowers, Kristen Elizabeth Tokio, Lily Marie Weekes, and Charlotte Maria Flowers.
Wade was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. During his life he owned and operated several businesses in Atlanta, Columbus and Panama City. In the 1960s, he was an integral part of a group of men who pinpointed and raised the CSS Jackson (aka Muskogee), an iron clad ram ship, and CSS Chattahoochee, a wooden hull steam ship, from the Chattahoochee River. Parts of both ships, including related artifacts which were found in or near the wrecks, are now on permanent display at the National Civil War Museum at Port Columbus in Columbus, GA. He was also an active member of East Columbus Rotary Club and Jaycees in Columbus, including serving as president of Rotary Club. Mr. Weekes was a skilled craftsman and gardener making many wooden cabinets and tables for the home, stained glass pieces and raising vegetables, fruit trees and nut trees for his family and friends. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
As an alternative to flowers, the family suggests contributions to SPCA of Wake County, 200 Pet Finder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603 in the name of Mr. Weekes if you so desire.
