Obituary

Willow Spring - Joseph Mayne Gould, age 69, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Wake Chapel Christian Church, 905 Wake Chapel Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC. A Graveside service will follow at 4:00 pm. at Buffalo Cemetery, 1333 Carthage Street, Sanford, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Eleanor Gould; son, Graham Gould; brother, Sandy Gould.

Joseph was born in Belfast, N Ireland. He studied at Missionary Training College in Glasgow, Scotland. Joe pastored a church for eight years in Liverpool where he and Diane lived with Graham and Jonathan. He loved going into the local public schools to run gospel assemblies and play with the children.

Joe came to the United States in 1989. He pastored at Sanford Chapel until 1999. While in Sanford, Joe enjoyed coaching soccer -- first at Grace Christian School, then continuing at Lee Christian school, which he was instrumental in helping to coordinate and build as a member of the school board. He especially enjoyed teaching his bible class students, and fondly remembered the trip he took with them to Disney World.

Joe was a passionate sports fan who loved Liverpool Football Club, and cheered for anything Wake Forest University where his son Graham attended.

Joe and Diane moved to Apex in 2000, and enjoyed being closer to their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. He never missed a graduation ceremony, chorus performance, school play or event, and doted on his grandchildren. Both Emma and Jackson recall his playful manner, love of card games, and his silly Donald Duck voice.

Joe and Diane found a church home in 2009 at Redeemer Community Church, where he loved being a distraction to some of the children by sharing his collection of sports collector’s cards with them! His many friends at Redeemer were a huge support when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease around the same time.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend, known for his quick wit, love for his friends and family, and strong faith. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 44 years, Diane Roberts Gould; son, Jonathan Gould and wife, Christy of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Emma and Jackson; brothers, Tom, David and Billy Gould; sisters, Anne Beattie and Janet Stillie.
